Over the years, I’ve grown in my understanding that our thoughts guide every aspect of our lives. You are not born knowing this. As a matter of fact, I don’t remember learning much of anything about the power of your thoughts until May 10, 1992. This is when I made the decision to surrender my life to Jesus Christ. At that moment, I began to learn how faith is both psychological and emotional.
As a new Christian, letting go of control and trying to “fix” everything was very difficult for me. I came to realize that this change of thought pattern could only be achieved through faith. Faith is an awareness that God is the one in control and is working on your behalf. Awareness isn’t created; it’s discovered. Many of us, if not most of us, remembers the exact place or date of our salvation…the day we surrendered control over to God. That is a discovery.
“”God” means love, and “will” means thought. God’s will, then, is loving thought. If God is the source of all good, then the love within us is the source of all good. When we love, we are automatically placing ourselves within an attitudinal and behavioral context that leads to an unfoldment of events at the highest level of good for everyone involved. We don’t always know what that unfoldment would look like, but we don’t need to. God will do HIS part of we do ours. Our only job in every situation is to merely let go of our resistance to love. What happens then is up to HIM. We’ve surrendered control. We’re letting him lead. We have faith he knows how.” ~ A Return to Love
Our mind is the greatest tool for changing the world around us. As an expression of God’s love, we can learn to shift our thinking by expanding and creating new patterns focused on joy and giving. This is done through consciousness and perception. Both can be achieved through releasing harmful thoughts and replacing them with positive, flourishing thoughts.
The voice in our own head can be our worst enemy. Often, we derive our sense of self from the content in our mind. The majority is past and future content. The past…”who are you without it?” The future…”one day when this or that happens, I’m going to be happy or at peace.” The present moment is what holds the key to freedom and peace. However, you cannot find the present moment as long as you are still listening to your mind.
When negative, unhappy or maybe painful thoughts of your past enter into your mind, practice drawing consciousness away from the thought back to love and the present moment. The single most vital step on your journey to awareness is to disidentify from the thoughts in your mind. The more you practice this, the more your consciousness and faith grows. Eventually, you may even catch yourself laughing out loud when the negative thoughts arise. This is because you now know that particular content of your mind no longer has control over you or even relevance.
Every moment we have a chance to change our past and our future by reprogramming the present.
With practice, your awareness will rise above your thoughts. You will find inner stillness that will open doors to your most creative self. Like many artists, their best work was created when they found mental quietness. Space is then available to receive the gifts and miracles that surround you. You will suddenly start noticing the miracles of life. The sound of a bird, the beauty of a flower, the warmth of the morning sun…will all look very different. When our minds, through focus on love, are allowed to be open vessels through which God expresses, our lives become the canvases for the expression of that joy.
